Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup all purpose flour (135 grams)
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and line a 9x9 inch baking with parchment paper; set aside.
  • In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to mix together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy; about 2 minutes. Add in the egg and vanilla and mix until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Add the dry ingredients into the wet and mix until just combined.
  • Pour in the chocolate chips and use a rubber spatula to mix, scraping down the sides of the bowl, until all of the ingredients are well combined.
  • Scrape the mixture into the prepared pan and press into pan. Bake on center rack in preheated oven for about 20-22 minutes, or until the center of the bars is set. Let cool on a wire rack completely, then cut into squares when cool.

Notes

  • Use room temperature softened butter.
  • Mix the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. This extra step will give the bars the best texture. 
  • Weigh the flour for accurate measurement. 
  • Make sure the bars are completely cooled before cutting. To get clean cuts, remove from pan by parchment paper and use a sharp knife to cut into squares. 
  • Store leftover bars in an airtight container at room temperature for three days or up to a week in the refrigerator.
