Ingredients You Need
- Butter: The base of great Rice Krispies treats is butter!
- Rice Krispies cereal: Any brand of crispy rice cereal will work.
- M&M's: I use the M&M's Ghoul's Mix, but feel free to use your favorite colors.
- Candy eyeballs: Perfect for making these treats look like monsters. I use Wilton candy eyeballs and you can find them at most stores like Michael's, Walmart, Target or Amazon!
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1: Melt the butter over low heat in a large saucepan.
Step 2: Add marshmallows, stir until they are fully melted.
Step 3: Remove from heat and add cereal and M&Ms. Stir until combined.
Step 4: Butter your hands, then grab handfuls of the mixture and form into a ball.
Step 5: Add eyeballs, and press them in slightly so they will stay put. Set on a baking sheet or tray. You may need to re-grease your hands a time or two throughout the process, so that the mixture won't stick to your hands.

Expert Tips
- Use fresh marshmallows! Fresh marshmallows will melt more easily and create a smoother mixture. Avoid using stale marshmallows, as they can create lumps and bumps in your Rice Krispies Treats.
- Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract after you melt the butter for a little extra flavor.
- Toss in some extra marshmallows when you mix in the cereal for a little extra chewiness.
Variations
- Peanut Butter: Add ½ cup of peanut butter to the melted marshmallow mixture before adding the Rice Krispies cereal.
- Chocolate: Add ½ cup of cocoa powder to the melted marshmallow mixture before adding the Rice Krispies cereal.
- Candy Corn: Use candy corn instead of Halloween M&Ms for a festive touch. You can also add a few drops of yellow and orange food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture to give it a candy corn-inspired look.
- Caramel: Add ½ cup of caramel sauce to the melted marshmallow mixture before adding the Rice Krispies cereal.
- Pumpkin Spice: Add 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice to the melted marshmallow mixture before adding the Rice Krispies cereal.
Storing
To store Halloween Rice Krispies Treats, place them in an airtight container or cover them tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. You can store them at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Recipe FAQ's
Nope! In fact, I do not recommend storing these in the refrigerator or freezer because it can make the marshmallow very hard.
Typically this happens when the cereal and/or marshmallows are not fresh. It can also happen when too much cereal and not enough marshmallows are used.
Absolutely! M&M's are a favorite, but sprinkles, unmelted marshmallows, chocolate chips and pretzels are also favorites! Be creative and have fun with this recipe!
I like to use butter to grease my hands, but you can also use nonstick cooking spray on your hands as well. Another trick is to get your hands wet and shake off the excess water!
